NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (NAMI SD/IC) is taking the next steps in creating options for long-term stable housing for people in our community living with behavioral health challenges.

NAMI San Diego Copper Hill Independent Living Home

In 2022, NAMI San Diego received an extraordinary gift: a home. Shelter in Transition, a small North County non-profit, deeded an Independent Living Home (ILH) serving seven (7) long-term residents as well as 3.8 acres of land to NAMI SD/IC. We are eternally grateful for this gift – and we have big plans for the property!

Over the past two years, a very generous bequest in memory of Michael D. Brooks enabled NAMI SD/IC to complete a comprehensive project to renovate the home, adjacent clubhouse, and open space. Now, we are working with the non-profit Social Venture Partners to develop a matrix of options for the development of the property to produce more independent, communal, permanent supportive housing for at-risk populations and others.

NAMI San Diego Independent Living Home for Women

In 2019, the NAMI SD/IC Board of Directors identified housing for individuals with behavioral health needs as a pillar in our 5-year strategic plan. With much research and planning, NAMI SD/IC opened our first ILH in central San Diego on February 15, 2020 – a location we refer to as Churchward. Although this facility opened only weeks prior to the beginning of Covid-19 worldwide pandemic, for the better part of half a decade we have successfully housed between nine and eleven women in the facility, providing more than 14,784 nights of housing in a safe, secure, and healing environment. We are very proud of these outcomes!

However, due to ongoing operational difficulties related to the physical location, NAMI SD/IC is sunsetting the Churchward site while the organization develops the operational infrastructure to reimagine an ILH in another location in the future. We feel strongly that Independent Living is a key piece of the housing puzzle and we remain committed to providing affordable rent options for those living with behavioral health needs.
